The lubricating property of vegetable oil based cutting fluid stems from the polarity of molecules of vegetable oil. The lubricating property is directly produced by such “Smart” molecules. Being long and heavy, such molecules in themselves are dipolar, that is, each side of a molecule is equipped with positive or negative charges conversely.
With special chemical affinity toward metallic surfaces, such molecules will attach themselves to the surfaces as magnets. Therefore, the densely arranged molecules of vegetable oil will be distributed on the metallic surfaces evenly and vertically and produce a layer of thick and lasting oil film to enable the vegetable oil to absorb considerable pressures.
Viscosity is another factor of vegetable oil that influences the production efficiency of machining. Lubricating oil films being too thick or thin will all aggravate the wear and tear of cutters. The low variability index of viscosity of vegetable oil upon the temperature variation makes sure the vegetable oil to be able to produce more stable oil films within the temperature range of processing.
